On May 8, Nebraska Cures recognized inspiring Omaha health and science leaders at our 2023 Spring Tribute Reception. Dr. James and Karen Linder received the Life Saver Award and Dr. Juliane Strauss-Soukup was named the 2024 Omaha Woman in Science. Our community is stronger due to the remarkable work of these leaders.

Nebraska Cures Board Member Dr. Jon Hinrichs shared the extensive biographies of the Linders including Jim’s role as CEO of Nebraska Medicine and Karen’s work in the field of cytotechnology.

“These are two outstanding resumes from two dynamic, committed servant leaders. Their influence is far-reaching and it seems that all of their productive activities have been for the overall well-being of the
community.”

Board member Dr. Jim Turpen introduced Dr. Strauss-Soukup and her extensive career in research at Creighton University. Dr. Strauss-Soukup shared the challenges of being a women in science and also delighted the audience with a short presentation of her research into riboswitches.

Instead of physical awards, the honorees selected community organizations committed to health and science for a financial gift from Nebraska Cures. The Linders selected the American Cancer Society and Dr. Strauss-Soukup selected the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Nebraska Cures is grateful to our event sponsors including Gold Sponsors and Lynne & John Boyer Family Foundation, University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), and the UNMC College of Public Health.
